The risks of smoking
Starter: Once the smoke has lifted…
In groups of 5-6, you need to produce a presentation (no more than 5 minutes long) on the effects of smoking. You need to focus on two effects of smoking using the articles and the internet to help you.
Your presentation can use ICT, role-play, posters, audience participation etc. but it must;
- involve the whole group
- not be longer than 5 minutes
- focus on two effects of smoking
PSE – Period 2: Monday 4th December
Starter: Google Bombing Experiment
Can we manipulate google? Let’s see if we can get our blogs to appear near the top of a google search.
- Add a comment to this post with two pieces of information;
- A search phrase which you would like to find your blog (e.g. Probably the best ICT teacher in the world)
- The URL (web address) of your blog (e.g. http://blogofmrc.wordpress.com)
- Open your blog and create a new post
- Check the comments on this post and then add a list of all the search phrases people would like to use
- Turn each of the phrases into links to that person’s blog e.g probably the best ICT teacher in the world
- Let’s see how long it takes for google to find your pages and add them to the search engine! (you need to make sure that google is able to find your blog, check this under options and privacy)
Having a positive self image
You need a copy of the worksheet – FEELING GOOD
- Complete each of the sentences on the sheet
- Get into groups of 4-6
- Take it in turns to read out the first sentence – your job is just to listen without making comments. You are free to pass if you don’t want to share your sentence
- Repeat this with the rest of the sentences.
Still in your groups, you need a set of IF I COULD CHOOSE CARDS
- Spread out the cards, face up in front of you
- Taking it in turns, think of the person on your right and choose a card that reflects one aspect of their personality. Give it to them explaining why you have chosen it. Blank cards can be used for a quality of your choice.
- Once you have all had a go, start again but this time think of the person on your left and go round the other way.
- Repeat this until each person has a set of four cards which have been given to them by others. Take away any remaining cards in the middle.
You now need to get a blank sheet of paper
- Draw 4 bubbles at the top and 4 at the bottom
- Add the four words you have been given to the top four bubbles
- Now, place all of your cards in the middle of the table
- Add four qualities that you would like to have to the remaining four bubbles and add the name of the person they were given to.
- Now complete these sentences somewhere on your sheet; The two most important qualities I possess and A quality I wish I had.
- Take it in turns to share your “created personalities” with the rest of the group
PSE – Period 2: Monday 20th November
Friendships
Task 1: How good a friend am I?
You are going to create an online survey which you will email to others for them to complete.
Click here for instructions on how to use surveymonkey to create an online survey. Base your questions on the following, you can add two of your own at the bottom if you wish.
When you analyse the results of your survey, make a note of the following (in your rough book or on your blog – anywhere you like);
- I am a good friend because: (name three things)
- I could be a better friend by: (name three things)
Task 2: Octoplus
- Copy and paste the picture below into an application of your choice (paint, publisher etc.)
- You can either print out the picture to fill it in by hand or complete it on the computer
- On each of the eight tentacles, write down what you feel are characteristics of a good friend – the tentacles that will surround and support you
- Once you have completed yours, share it with a couple of friends and compare your tentacles – are there any that you now want to add to yours?

Task 3: If I were a true friend….
Using a comment on this post, answer some of the questions below. What would you do in some of these circumstances? Be sure to add the circumstance as well as your answer.

Speed Revision
Today, with the aid of the 6th form, you are going to learn some revision techniques.
- Select a piece of work that you would like help with, this could be French verbs, Chemistry notes, Maths calculations or History facts.
- In your groups, choose one piece of work for each session (there will be four 15 minute sessions)
- The 6th formers will show you how they would revise this piece of work
What did you revise and which technique did you use? Were you shown more than one technique and which one did you find most useful? Perhaps you could post this on your own blog and provide a link to this post….
Rules – PSE Lesson Mon 3rd September
Today’s lesson is all about rules. What are rules? Why do we need them? Can you sort rules into categories? Hopefully, by the end of the lesson we will come up with some form rules for 8R. If you are commenting on this post, use your school login ID and school email (if you don’t know your email use “pupil@shr.gdst.net”
- What is a rule? What sort of rules do you have at home? Answer this question by commenting on this post.
- In your books or on a piece of paper, try dividing the rules you have a home into three categories;
- yourself – how you behave as an individual
- others – social rules, how you behave as a member of a group
- tidiness rules
- Go through the school rules and divide those into the same categories
- What would happen if we didn’t have any rules? Again answer this question by commenting on this post.
- Make up some signs (like road signs, for example) for some of the school rules. You can do this on the computer or draw them.
- In groups of three or four, write a list of rules for 8R and then add them to a comment.
